John McLarnan (1980-81)

John McLarnan

McLarnan led the Saints to the first of two state championships in 1981, in the team’s second year of existence. An All-American and all-state player that season, he left with 157 strikeouts over two seasons over 195 innings. He played 15 complete games, including three shutouts. The program went 24-11 in 1980 and 31-8 in 1981. He transferred to San Jose State and was drafted in the 20th round by the Phillies (1983.) He played seven minor league seasons. John’s daughter, Dakota, played for Sierra College in the 2012-14 season, continuing the community college athletics tradition.

“Getting the call from Coach Piraro in July 1979 opened up my understanding, not just of the game of baseball, but of life,” said McLarnan. “Sam was not much older than us, but I carry on his lessons today... come early, come prepared and work your ass off.”

McLarnan has worked for Western Tool and Supply for close to three decades.
